grassrootspeace.org

November 5, 2007: This website is an archive of the former website, traprockpeace.org, which was created 10 years ago by Charles Jenks. It became one of the most populace sites in the US, and an important resource on the antiwar movement, student activism, 'depleted' uranium and other topics. Jenks authored virtually all of its web pages and multimedia content (photographs, audio, video, and pdf files. As the author and registered owner of that site, his purpose here is to preserve an important slice of the history of the grassroots peace movement in the US over the past decade. He is maintaining this historical archive as a service to the greater peace movement, and to the many friends of Traprock Peace Center. Blogs have been consolidated and the calendar has been archived for security reasons; all other links remain the same, and virtually all blog content remains intact.

THIS SITE NO LONGER REFLECTS THE CURRENT AND ONGOING WORK OF TRAPROCK PEACE CENTER, which has reorganized its board and moved to Greenfield, Mass. To contact Traprock Peace Center, call 413-773-7427 or visit its site. Charles Jenks is posting new material to PeaceJournal.org, a multimedia blog and resource center.

Scott Ritter Speaks Out Against Wars on Iraq and Iran

"People were trapped by their own ignorance and the fear that is induced by ignorance so that they could not stand up and speak truth to power because, frankly speaking, most people didn't know what the truth was. We were told that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, massive stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, and, to be honest, most Americans didn't have a clue what a weapon of mass destruction was. They didn't know what chemical weapons were, biological weapons were, long-range ballistic missiles. They might have a vague understanding of what a nuclear weapon is, but not really, not what it takes to build a nuclear weapon. They were so ignorant about nuclear weapons that they bought into the argument that Iraq, a nation that is sitting on many tons of yellow-cake uranium ore, would have to go to an African country to buy new stockpiles. They were so ignorant about nuclear weapons that they bought at face value Dick Cheney's proclamation that Iraq was acquiring aluminum tubes to build a new family of centrifuges to enrich uranium when everybody who deals with the enrichment of uranium using the centrifuge method knows that aluminum tubes will never work. We don't build them with aluminum tubes. It doesn't happen. But, no, the American people, informed as always about the complexities of these very difficult issues, said 'my gosh, the President has said yellow cake, and Dick Cheney has said aluminum tubes, and there must be a nuclear threat because Condoleezza Rice has told us 'we don't want to wait for the smoking gun to become a mushroom cloud.' So like the compliant little sheep that we are, we *bah, bah* get led down the path towards a war that has been a disaster, an unmitigated disaster, a war based on a lie, a war based on not just the ignorance of the American public but the moral indifference of those whom we elect to hire office to represent us in our name, namely the congress of the United States of America." - Scott Ritter, November 17, 2005, Amherst

Traprock Peace Center was founded in Deerfield, Massachusetts in 1979 for the study and promotion of nonviolent solutions to local, national and international problems, social and economic justice, and disarmament. Supporters call for an end to illegal and unconstitutional warfare in Iraq and other countries. They amplify the need for truth in government and truth in media by bringing this program to students, the press, radio, and internet audiences. Their website averages over 2500 visits per day.

BACKGROUND:
Former UNSCOM Inspector and Marine Intelligence Officer, Scott Ritter is ... a seasoned media commentator, and has been interviewed by Congressional staff and committees as well as CNN, MSNBC, NPR and the BBC, and on such shows as Hardball, Crossfire, Frontline, and Donahue. His assessments stem from nearly a decade of professional on-the-ground experience in Iraq.

A former intelligence officer with professional experience of planning military operations inside Iraq. Ritter served directly under General Schwarzkopf during the 1991 Gulf War. Ritter can speak with unusual depth and detail to the logistics of launching military operations. His right-on-the-money analysis made him a Pentagon “whistleblower” during that war, when he single-handedly refuted US military claims that it was shooting down Scud missiles.
A recognized expert on Iraq’s program for weapons of mass destruction. In the course of his UNSCOM career, Ritter participated in 30 weapons inspection, 7 of them as chief inspector. The Iraqi government branded him a “spy” for his aggressive inspection style. Before the rush to war, Ritter addressed questions on concealment, noncompliance, and the effective destruction of weapons and production capabilities in Iraq. Ritter explained why he trusts surveillance and forensic sampling, not Iraqi disclosures or the U.S. Administration's proclamations. Working with intelligence agencies from many nations has given him a unique perspective on the “War against Terror.“

Author of Endgame: Solving The Iraq Problem Once And For All, Frontier Justice, Weapons of Mass Destruction and the Bushwhacking of America, and just out, Iraq Confidential, Dual Deception. Ritter's writings have appeared in the Boston Globe, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, & Arms Control Today.
With the support of donors, Traprock Peace Center began working with Ritter in December of 2002, in radio interview at WMUA. Traprock has sponsored and co-sponsored public programs and press conferences in Northampton, Amherst, Greenfield, Deerfield, Shelburne Falls, Springfield, Boston, Wichita, Chicago, Indianapolis and Baltimore, and provided contact information to many groups across the nation who have brought Ritter to speak about disarmament in Iraq, and the need for our sustained engagement in public policy issues and decision-making.
In his book, Endgame, Solving the Iraq Crisis, Ritter says, “...I have been supported by a tremendous network of American citizens who reached out to me during this time and helped spread the message of peace and justice as an alternative to war and suffering. To ... Traprock Peace Center, thanks not only for bringing the message to the people of Massachusetts, but the entire country. ...”
