grassrootspeace.org

November 5, 2007: This website is an archive of the former website, traprockpeace.org, which was created 10 years ago by Charles Jenks. It became one of the most populace sites in the US, and an important resource on the antiwar movement, student activism, 'depleted' uranium and other topics. Jenks authored virtually all of its web pages and multimedia content (photographs, audio, video, and pdf files. As the author and registered owner of that site, his purpose here is to preserve an important slice of the history of the grassroots peace movement in the US over the past decade. He is maintaining this historical archive as a service to the greater peace movement, and to the many friends of Traprock Peace Center. Blogs have been consolidated and the calendar has been archived for security reasons; all other links remain the same, and virtually all blog content remains intact.

THIS SITE NO LONGER REFLECTS THE CURRENT AND ONGOING WORK OF TRAPROCK PEACE CENTER, which has reorganized its board and moved to Greenfield, Mass. To contact Traprock Peace Center, call 413-773-7427 or visit its site. Charles Jenks is posting new material to PeaceJournal.org, a multimedia blog and resource center.

Iraq: the Logic of Withdrawal

Model Postcards to Members of Congress

[DeAnne's an inspiration!]
------------------------
September 17, 2002
Sent to Kerry, Kennedy, Olver:
I urge you to insist upon hearing from a diversity of witnesses during
congressional hearings on Iraq, not just from witnesses who favor war.
Please call upon Scott Ritter and other experts such as Phyllis Bennis, Hans
Von Sponeck and Rahul Mahajan.
It is extremely important that congress have as many facts as possible on
both sides of the argument before deciding on a course of action that will
cause suffering and loss of life. With such information I believe you would
join me in opposing a pre-emptive war on Iraq.
Sincerely yours,
DeAnne Riddle

Sent to Bush:
I urge you to listen to a diversity of opinion on Iraq, not just to advisors
who favor war. Please considered testimony from Scott Ritter and other
experts such as Phyllis Bennis, Hans Von Sponeck and Rahul Mahajan.
It is extremely important that you have as many facts as possible on both
sides of the argument before deciding on a course of action that will cause
suffering and loss of life. With such information I believe even you might
change your mind and join me in opposing a pre-emptive war on Iraq.
Sincerely yours,
DeAnne Riddle

Sent a hand-written postcard to:
President George W. Bush
I oppose waging a pre-emptive war on Iraq.
War on Iraq would divert needed money from domestic priorities, alienate our
allies, increase anti-American hatred and ultimately make us less safe.
Please stop and think before rushing head-long into a war in the tinderbox
of the Middle East.
Sincerely yours,
DeAnne Riddle

Sent a hand-written postcard to:
Senator John Kerry
Thank you very much for your Op-Ed piece in the New York Times last week
about the impending war with Iraq.
I am pleased that someone is giving serious thought to the implications,
complexities and possible results of such a war before we follow a path that
could be disastrous for us and the Middle East.
Please don‚t allow the congress to just rubber stamp Bush‚s belligerent
stance.
Sincerely yours,
DeAnne Riddle

Representative John Olver
I was pleased to read in the Daily Hampshire Gazette that there is serious
discussion in congress about the advisability of starting a war with Iraq.
It is good that someone is giving thought to the implications and
complexities of such a war before we follow a path that could be disastrous
for us and the Middle East.
Please don‚t allow the congress to rubber stamp Bush‚s belligerent stance.
Sincerely yours,
DeAnne Riddle

Sent a hand-written postcards to:
President George W. Bush
Senator Edward Kennedy
Senator John Kerry
Representative John Olver
Dear ____:
I oppose a military invasion of Iraq. A pre-emptive invasion would violate
international law and likely lead to increased hatred of the U.S.A. and to
increased instability in the region. It could easily mire us in a long-term
conflict.
We should not start a war against Iraq!
Sincerely yours,
DeAnne Riddle
