UMass Protests Andy Card May 21-25

**********************************************
Honor Students, Not War Criminals!
NO DEGREE FOR ANDREW CARD
UMass is a Public University: Card Shames Us All!
**********************************************

PROTESTS (for details, see below):
Tuesday, May 22, 12:30: March
Thursday, May 24, 4:30-6:30: Stand-out
Friday, May 25, 12:00-5:00: Commencement

Please join UMass students, faculty, and staff in opposing
UMass’s plan to award an honorary degree at graduate
commencement to Iraq War architect Andrew Card. During his
tenure as White House Chief of Staff, Card founded the
White House Iraq Group in order to coordinate efforts to
“market” (his term) the war to the American public. Andrew
Card shares responsibility for the lies and distortions
that led to the Iraq war and occupation. He is therefore
not eligible for an honorary degree which can be awarded
only to “persons of great accomplishment and high ethical
standards who exemplify the ideals of the university of
Massachusetts.”

RALLY AND MARCH
Tuesday, May 22, 12:30 p.m.
Whitmore Administration Building, UMass

A final march and rally will be held to try to prevent the
award. Meet in front of the Whitmore administration
building on the UMass campus. March to the Amherst Town
Commons. Our first rally brought 200 people; our second
rally had 400. Third time’s the charm!

COMMENCEMENT EVE RUSH HOUR STAND-OUT
Thursday, May 24, evening rush hour
Intersections at UMass or in your town

If the award goes forward as planned, please make signs
and stand on highly trafficked intersections on the UMass
campus or in your town during Thursday’s evening commute.
Suggested slogans: “Honor Students, Dis Card”; “Honor
Education, Not War Criminals”; “No Degree for Andrew
Card”; “Protest Tomorrow at UMass, 12:00,” etc.

PROTEST AT THE COMMENCEMENT
Friday, May 25th, 12:00 p.m.
Mullins Center, UMass

The ceremony begins at 2:00, but 12:30 – 2:30 is the key
time, because that’s when people will be entering the
Mullins Center. There will be a press conference at 1:00
p.m. We encourage your most creative, nonviolent
responses. Signs, banners, songs, drums, puppets, and
street theater are all very welcome. The RAGING GRANNIES
will sing. People in orange jumpsuits will perform street
theater. Please stay as long as you can: commencement will
last several hours.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE GRADUATE STUDENTS DESERVE OUR
RESPECT. LET’S MAKE IT CLEAR THAT WE ARE HONORING STUDENTS
WHILE WE PROTEST CARD.

Note that students, faculty, and members of the
commencement audience will be taking action inside the
center. We are committed to preserving the ceremony for
the graduate students and disrupting only the portion that
focuses on Card.

TRANSPORTATION TO THE MULLINS CENTER ON FRIDAY

The Mullins Center is at 200 Commonwealth Ave near the
athletic fields on the UMass campus. If you drive, be
aware that event parking rules will be in effect. Parking
officials will direct you to a lot. The earlier you
arrive, the closer you will be.

Numerous buses provide convenient service to UMass. See
http://www.pvta.com. For example, the 43 bus provides
connects Northampton to UMass, leaving Smith at 11:00,
11:20, 11:40, etc. and arriving at UMass at 11:30, 11:50,
12:10, etc.

To get to Mullins Center from Northampton, we recommend
you get off the bus at the first stop after the bus enters
the campus and makes a right on Massachusetts Ave. You
will then backtrack along Massachusetts Ave. and take your
first right onto Commonwealth Ave. The Mullins Center will
be straight ahead.

Whitmore Administration Building is on the Haggis Mall,
which is the next stop on Massachusetts Avenue for buses
from Northampton.

WHY THIS MATTERS SO MUCH

It is now an undisputed fact that the Bush Administration
knowingly and deliberately used lies and distortions to
persuade the American public that the invasion and
occupation of Iraq was necessary. The two major arguments
that were advanced to justify the war were: (a) that Iraq
possessed weapons of mass destruction; and (b) that there
was a link between the attacks of 9/11 and Iraq. It has
now been confirmed by many sources (including George
Tenet, Former Director of the CIA) that these were not
just “failures of intelligence,” but deliberate
falsifications aimed at confusing and scaring American
citizens to support an illegal war. An internal memo
detailing the minutes of a meeting of Tony Blair’s top
ministers reported that “the intelligence and facts were
being fixed around the policy” by the Bush administration.
The resulting illegal war has led to the deaths and
injuries of thousands of American soldiers , as well as
the deaths of hundreds of thousand of Iraqis. In addition
the international reputation of the United States is in
tatters, and the world has never been more dangerous. On
every single count, the lies and deceptions of the Bush
administration regarding the war in Iraq have been
globally disastrous.

As President Bush’s Chief of Staff Andrew Card was a
founding member of the White House Iraq Group (WHIG) that
cherry-picked the evidence and coordinated the propaganda
campaign designed to deceive public opinion. This has been
confirmed by a wide range of experts — including
published work in peer-reviewed journals — as well as
government insiders. Awarding an honorary degree to Andrew
Card therefore brings great disrepute to the University
and makes a mockery of any of its attempts to join the
ranks of the top tier research schools in the country. To
honor a person who is guilty of such blatant intellectual
dishonesty destroys any idea that the University is a
serious academic institution committed to basic values of
truth and honesty. It tarsnishes anyone connected with the
University.
