Mission: An informal group
of Baltimore residents got together in September
because of Iraq. We're busy people with families
to support, but we had to do something for the families
in Iraq who have suffered and will suffer.
Basra is an old port city in the south of Iraq:
the ties with Baltimore are obvious. When
we named Basra as our Friendship City, we did not
ask for permission from our government (or the Iraqi
government!) But on Thursday, December 5th,
several hundred of us walked to the Washington Monument
Lighting from Charles and Read Street with candles
and sparklers and photos of children from Basra.
We cannot be part of this war against the Iraqi
people. Our previous actions were directed
at our wavering senator, Barbara Mikulski, and included
a mock trial of her for "waffling " in
front of her office, with a crowd of over a hundred
people. (She ended up voting against the war).

Mission: With over 100
chapters in 27 states, not including the Student
Peace Action Network (SPAN), Peace Action is one
of the US's largest peace networks. Peace
Action, the merger of SANE and The Freeze, has effectively
mobilized for peace and disarmament for over forty
years. We get results: from the 1963 treaty to ban
above ground nuclear testing, to the 1996 signing
of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, from ending
the war in Vietnam, to blocking weapons sales to
human rights abusing countries.
