November 5, 2007: This website is an archive of the former website,, which was created 10 years ago by Charles Jenks. It became one of the most populace sites in the US, and an important resource on the antiwar movement, student activism, 'depleted' uranium and other topics. Jenks authored virtually all of its web pages and multimedia content (photographs, audio, video, and pdf files. As the author and registered owner of that site, his purpose here is to preserve an important slice of the history of the grassroots peace movement in the US over the past decade. He is maintaining this historical archive as a service to the greater peace movement, and to the many friends of Traprock Peace Center. Blogs have been consolidated and the calendar has been archived for security reasons; all other links remain the same, and virtually all blog content remains intact.

THIS SITE NO LONGER REFLECTS THE CURRENT AND ONGOING WORK OF TRAPROCK PEACE CENTER, which has reorganized its board and moved to Greenfield, Mass. To contact Traprock Peace Center, call 413-773-7427 or visit its site. Charles Jenks is posting new material to, a multimedia blog and resource center.

Alternative Media

(We don't agree with EVERYTHING on these sites. Much we do agree with, or find compelling. We do think its important to have a strong alternative media to counter the concentration of media in the hands of powerful interests in the US.)

Information Clearing House - A tremendous (Traprock's words) independent media source. It is one person's effort to correct the distorted perceptions provided by commercial media. It is non-commercial, funded by readers contributions. and grew out of personal frustration and anger at the failure of traditional commercial media to inform the American public, especially as it relates to US foreign policy. It is a source of unreported (or under reported) news from around the globe and an effort to provide more depth and understanding to current issues. The site is the work of one person, a private individual who is not affiliated iwth any particular political party nor funded by any group. - News from occupied Iraq, this site, based in Italy, is one of the most important international news sites covering the war and occupation.

Socialist Worker - Weekly newspaper of the International Socialist Organization, which strives to "mobilize opposition to all forms of oppression and exploitation. The ISO believes that capitalism produces poverty, racism, famine, environmental catastrophe and war. By getting involved in struggles big and small, the ISO aims to build with others a society where we all have control over our lives. We believe another world is possible."

FLASHPOINTS! Radio - Terrific audio resources with links to the entire Pacific Network. This is in-depth investigative news radio for the world produced live every weekday airing at 5 PM Pacific Time at 94.1 Berkeley, California USA - This Website is mainly dedicated to articles by Robert Fisk - Middle East correspondent for Independent Newspaper UK. In addition to his writings, you'll find a superb collection of photos of the Iraqi victims of war and links to a wealth of other resources.

The Traveling Soldier On-Line - Telling the truth - about the occupation, the cuts to veterans benefits, or the dangers of depleted uranium - is the first reasonTraveling Soldier is necessary. But we want to do more than tell the truth; we want to report on the resistance to those on top - whether it’s in the streets of Baghdad, New York, or inside the armed forces.

The Agonist - Daily commentary that is thoughtful, global and timely. - "Left Hook is dedicated to publishing the news and views of the new generation, including political commentary and analysis, ground reports from activists around the country, interviews and reviews, historical and theoretical contributions, and cultural contributions such as poems, short stories, and progressive artwork. We hope that by being a center of ongoing readership and discussion of the burning political issues of our age, we can contribute to building greater levels of understanding, cohesiveness, education, and solidarity amongst our generation." See Interviewing the Student Antiwar Movement.

GreenLeft Weekly - Green Left Weekly is Australia's radical weekly newspaper. Green Left Weekly aims to provide a much-needed forum for discussion and debate about changing the world. By giving a voice to progressive ideas, by sharing a wide range of views, by linking issues, campaigns and activists, and by letting people know how they can join with others to take action for change, the paper contributes to the development of a more just and democratic world.

therawstory - alternative news - strong antidote to neo-con dominated news services. - Speechless is a word to describe one's reaction to the breadth and timeliness of the news links on this site. We also like this site for it's linking to the source material directly, rather than copying other's work and reprinting it wholesale under 'fair use.' (Traprock uses 'fair use' at times, generally for media articles with links that will expire (due to the media source's subscription plans or placing the materials in archives folders after a period of time.) Some of it is controversial (e.g. 9/11 conspiracy material). This is what freedom of speech looks like.

Awakened Woman - News and inspiration for women who want to change the world! - Alternative news, political discourse and commentary.

Online Writers Against War was founded by its editor, freelance-writer Ani Corné, in an attempt to gather 'kindred spirits' in an on-line journal/forum.  The website provides anti-war articles, commentaries and photo material for free reading. It also serves as an incentive for all readers to become more active in speaking out against war.

- World news, of, by and for the world.

U.N. Observer & International Report - a leading international journal of news and opinion.

Commondreams - A leading source of important news stories and opinion that do not get the mainstream media attention they deserve. We'd prefer they link directly to the news item rather than to the news organization - would make it easier to find original.

We present a daily round-up of "unknown news" from credible sources, along with intelligent (we try!) commentary and dialogue on current events. Unlike CNN and your daily newspaper, Unknown News is not "fair and impartial, objective journalism," because we'll never pretend not to care. We are deeply concerned about fading freedoms in America, and US foreign policy that exports death instead of liberty." Informative, opinionated, fun and an incredible array of alternative media and cultural links. - focuses on corporate broadcast media. How does it deceive viewers? Nice feature is that its reprints give links to the original articles, not merely to the originating organization. Where are the links, though, to other alternative news sources?

War Times - is produced to help broaden and deepen peace efforts by compiling information and analysis, and putting them into the hands of large numbers of readers.

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) - working to ensure what it says, and it has a listing of media resources, and links.
