grassrootspeace.org

November 5, 2007: This website is an archive of the former website, traprockpeace.org, which was created 10 years ago by Charles Jenks. It became one of the most populace sites in the US, and an important resource on the antiwar movement, student activism, 'depleted' uranium and other topics. Jenks authored virtually all of its web pages and multimedia content (photographs, audio, video, and pdf files. As the author and registered owner of that site, his purpose here is to preserve an important slice of the history of the grassroots peace movement in the US over the past decade. He is maintaining this historical archive as a service to the greater peace movement, and to the many friends of Traprock Peace Center. Blogs have been consolidated and the calendar has been archived for security reasons; all other links remain the same, and virtually all blog content remains intact.

THIS SITE NO LONGER REFLECTS THE CURRENT AND ONGOING WORK OF TRAPROCK PEACE CENTER, which has reorganized its board and moved to Greenfield, Mass. To contact Traprock Peace Center, call 413-773-7427 or visit its site. Charles Jenks is posting new material to PeaceJournal.org, a multimedia blog and resource center.

Birddogging the Candidates on Nuclear and Radiation Issues

Sunny MillerŐs questions

Sherree Craigue's questions

Sunny MillerŐs Questions

During summer campaigns, we might have a chance these questions for candidates:

1. I'm concerned about the tons of radioactive and toxic uranium and nuclear weapons being shipped on our highways, railroads and ships:

Are fire-fighters in your district aware that uranium weapons shipments are currently shipped on our highways without labels warning that these munitions made of radioactive waste (and used by all branches of our armed forces) are a contamination hazard in the event of a fire or explosion?

2. Is it true that in case of an accident on our highways involving nuclear or radioactive materials, fire departments and first responders have instructions to wrap victims who might be contaminated in plastic and transport them to a hospital with a licensed decontamination facility, rather than rinse them off immediately, in order to protect the environment?

How much further damage might down-winders suffer during a half-hour or hour before decontamination at a licensed facility?

3. What can be done to encourage public officials to commit to telling the public the truth in hard times, when the image that our representative desire naturally gravitates toward the illusion of being in control?

Do you find that you and our colleagues' level of control over safety issues is severely compromised by the realities of the nuclear age--when thousands of our nuclear weapons still sit ready on hair-trigger alert -- and Congress is spending millions on what I MUST call new, "UN-usable" nuclear weapons?

4. What can end the pervasive spin that "WE" are the good guys and "THEY" are the bad guys?  Would you agree that this is the faulty foundation of so much tragedy, both today and throughout our history?

Sherree CongrueŐs Questions

1. The US is one of several countries which posess "Depleted" Uranium weapons, which produce radioactive dust when fired. Inhaling this dust exposes civilians and troops alike to low level radiation for years, as it remains lodged in the lungs, and slowly dissolves to migrate to bones and lypmh nodes, etc., where its radioactivity and heavy metal poisoning continues, leaving disease, chromosome damage and premature death in its wake. DU dust can travel on the winds for untold miles, so it cannot be cleaned up entirely, though at least removing and properly disposing of DU bombed out buildings' dust and DU infested tanks would help.

How are you addressing the global proliferation of "depleted" uranium weapons, and the cleanup and health issues regarding DU?

2. RE: DU and VETS:

Troops now in Iraq have undoubtedly been exposed to "depleted" uranium from their own weapons and DU armored tanks, which produce radioactive dust when fired or penetrated. Inhaling this dust exposes our troops to low level radiation and heavy metal poisoning for years, as it remains lodged in the lungs, and slowly dissolves and migrates to bones and lypmh nodes, etc., where its radioactivity continues. DU dust can travel on the winds for untold miles, so not only are those in the immediate vicinity exposed, but countless others as well. The military is publicly ignoring the hazard of internal low level radiation, and compounding the error by providing testing designed not to measure DU exposure. The April 29, 2004 military directive calls for mandatory testing for Level I and Level II exposures (those most directly exposed) and testing for Level III exposures (such as driving by a burning tank hit with DU munitions) for those who request it,  which would imply that they would need to know where DU had been used and its hazards. Testing is most effective within 24 hours of exposure, as is proper medical treatment to mitigate the damage (though there is no cure for DU exposure).

How are you supporting our DU injured troops, so that they will be truthfully informed of the hazards of these weapons to themselves and the civilians around them, and promptly and effectively tested and properly cared for?

3. Under the Geneva Convention, weapons whose effects indiscriminately target civilians, and whose effects last after the cessation of hostilities are baned. "Depleted" uranium weapons and DU armored tanks produce radioactive, toxic heavy metal dust when fired or penetrated. Inhaling this dust exposes humans and animals to low level radiation and heavy metal poisoning for years, as it remains lodged in the lungs, and slowly dissolves and migrates to bones and lypmh nodes, etc., where it continues to damage tissue, and can even damage the unborn. DU dust can travel on the winds for untold miles, so it can cross into other countries and continents. The US is publicly ignoring the hazard of internal low level radiation, and downplaying the danger of this biological weapon. How will you bring the US and the other nations who have "depleted" uranium weapons into compliance with the Geneva Convention?

4. These health hazards affect not only our troops and the civilians overseas in harms way, they also affect neighborhoods in the US and Puerto Rico, where DU has been manufactured and tested, including the neighbors of the former National Lead Industries site in Colonie, NY. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR), like the US Department of Defense, has publicly ignored the hazard of internal low level radiation, and downplayed the danger of this biological
weapon.

How will you ensure that the manufacture and testing of products such as "depleted" uranium weapons does not posion our communities, and how will you provide effective testing and proper medical care and compensation to those who have been affected?

5. President Bush spoke eloquently on how war criminals could not hide behind the excuse that they were only following orders. He was referring to Sadam Hussein's rule, but the words ring true for all time. If we, the most powerful nation in the world, commit war crimes and hide behind excuses, we can expect other countries to do the same. The US is and has been using "depleted" uranium weapons which harm innocent civilians for years after the conflict, as they produce radioactive, toxic heavy metal dust. Inhaling this dust exposes humans and animals to low level radiation and heavy metal poisoning for years, as it remains lodged in the lungs, and slowly dissolves and migrates to bones and lypmh nodes, etc., where it continues to damage tissue, and can even damage the unborn.

How will you ensure that US troops do not commit war crimes, such as using indiscriminate biolgogical weapons such as "depleted" uranium which continue harming innocent civilians for untold years?
