Covington, Lousiana Peace Demonstration, March 18, 2006
COVINGTON, LA On the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq,
the Covington Peace Project and the Greater Covington NAACP joined forces to
stage a three hour antiwar demonstration at a major downtown intersection. This
first planned action since Hurricane Katrina roared ashore last August was,
by small town standards, well attended. But the absence of so many who had stood
with us on this corner - due to Katrina - was more than noticable.
We also noticed that passersby offered more support than in years past, although
a few still expressed deep seated anger towards the protesters. Quite frankly,
in light of the way that the government has treated South Louisiana over the
last six months, it is astounding that anyone here could possibly defend the
Bush Administration for anything. - Buddy Spell
